How the formula works

eNPS = (promoters − detractors) ÷ all responses × 100. Promoters answered 9 or 10, passives 7 or 8, and detractors 0 to 6. Passives are not in the subtraction. They are in the total.

What the number means

The score runs from −100 to +100. Above zero means more promoters than detractors. Passives pull the score toward zero because they increase the total without adding to either side. A small survey moves more than a large one: two people changing their answer matters in a team of 20 and barely moves a company of 2,000. Teams choose their own target. There is no universal pass mark.

Worked examples

More promoters than detractors

50 promoters, 30 passives, 20 detractors. Total 100. (50 − 20) ÷ 100 × 100.

30

More detractors than promoters

20 promoters, 20 passives, 40 detractors. Total 80. (20 − 40) ÷ 80 × 100.

-25

Questions

Why do passives change the score if they are not promoters or detractors?

They sit in the denominator. Adding passives without adding promoters or detractors moves the score closer to zero.

What is a good eNPS?

Above zero means promoters outnumber detractors. Many teams treat a score they have beaten before as the useful comparison. A single number without the response count is easy to overread.

Can I enter percentages instead of people?

Yes, if the three groups add up to 100. The score is a share, so 50, 30, and 20 people give the same result as 50%, 30%, and 20%.
