How the formula works

Pro-rata salary = full-time annual salary × (days in post ÷ days in the year).

What the number means

The result is the gross salary for the part of the year the person is in post. Someone who joins halfway through a 365-day year is planned at about half the full-time salary. It does not calculate tax, pension, holiday, or take-home pay. Part-time hours are a different sum: full-time salary × (their weekly hours ÷ full-time weekly hours).

Worked examples

Half a year

Full-time salary £45,000. 183 days in post. 365 days in the year. Share is 183 ÷ 365 = 50.1%. 45,000 × 0.501.

£22,561.64

A quarter of the year

The same £45,000 salary for 91 days. 91 ÷ 365 = 24.9%. 45,000 × 0.249.

£11,219.18

Questions

Does this calculator pro-rate part-time hours?

No. It scales by days in the year. For a 3-day week, multiply the full-time salary by the hours they work divided by a full-time week.

What do I enter in a leap year?

Set days in the year to 366, and count the days they are actually in post, including 29 February when it falls inside that spell.

Is the result take-home pay?

No. It is a gross planning figure for the salary cost of a partial year. It is not a payslip, a tax calculation, or a holiday entitlement.
