How the formula works

Compa-ratio = salary ÷ band midpoint × 100. The midpoint is the middle of the pay band. If you only have a minimum and a maximum, the midpoint is their average.

What the number means

100% means the salary sits on the midpoint. Below 100% is under the middle of the band you entered. Above 100% is over it. A common reading is that new starters sit nearer 80–95% and experienced people nearer 105–120%, but that is a convention, not a rule. The midpoint is your band, which may differ from an outside market rate.

Worked examples

Under the middle

Salary £47,000. Midpoint £50,000. 47,000 ÷ 50,000 × 100.

94%

Over the middle

Salary £55,000. Midpoint £50,000. 55,000 ÷ 50,000 × 100.

110%

Questions

Why is the result a percentage?

A compa-ratio of 0.94 and a result of 94% are the same comparison. This calculator shows the percentage.

Does 100% mean the person is paid the market rate?

It means they are paid the midpoint of the band you typed in. Check that band against the market separately if you need a market comparison.

What if I do not know the midpoint?

Add the band minimum and the band maximum, then divide by two. The pay band midpoint calculator does that step.
