FTE calculator

Calculate full-time equivalent (FTE) by dividing weekly hours by the company’s full-time week.

Register your company

How the formula works

FTE = hours per week ÷ full-time hours per week.

What the number means

Full-time equivalent turns different schedules into a headcount you can add up. A person on 22.5 hours in a company whose full-time week is 37.5 is 0.6 FTE. Two of those people are 1.2 FTE. Headcount would have called them two people. Use FTE for cost and capacity. Use headcount for a list of humans.

Worked examples

22.5 hours against 37.5

22.5 ÷ 37.5.

0.6 FTE, which is 60% of a full-time role

A full-time week

37.5 ÷ 37.5.

Questions

Can FTE be more than 1?

Yes, if someone is contracted for more hours than the company’s full-time week. That is a signal to check the contract, not a result this page rejects.

Do I add FTE or people when I plan payroll?

Add FTE, then multiply by the full-time salary, when part-time people are paid pro rata. Adding people and multiplying by the full-time salary overstates the cost.

What about someone who works full days but only some weeks?

Average the hours across the whole year and enter that weekly average. A person who works full-time every other week is about 0.5 FTE.
