How the formula works

Gap = (higher average − lower average) ÷ higher average × 100. The difference in money is the higher average minus the lower average.

What the number means

An average of £52,000 against an average of £45,500 is a gap of £6,500, which is 12.5% of the higher average. The page does not know which group is which. It reports the gap between the two numbers you enter. A statutory gender pay gap report uses defined hourly rates, bonus shares, and quartiles. Those extra steps are not done here. A gap between two averages is a prompt to look at the jobs, the hours, and the levels inside each average.

Questions

Is a gap the same as unequal pay for the same job?

No. Two averages can differ because the groups do different jobs or sit at different levels. Unequal pay for the same work is a comparison of individuals in the same role, not of two company-wide averages.

Which way round do I enter the groups?

Either way. The result uses the higher of the two as the baseline. Swap them and the percentage stays the same.

Can I enter medians instead of averages?

Yes. Label the result as a median gap if that is what you typed. A median moves less when a few very high salaries sit in one group.
