How the formula works

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. Monthly salary = annual salary ÷ 12.

What the number means

The annual figure is the hourly rate paid for every contracted hour across 52 weeks. The monthly figure is that year divided into 12 equal parts. A weekly paid person does not receive that monthly amount each month, because some months have more paydays.

Worked examples

£23 an hour, 37.5 hours

23 × 37.5 × 52 = 44,850. Monthly is 44,850 ÷ 12.

£44,850 a year, £3,737.50 a month

The same rate on a 40-hour week

23 × 40 × 52.

£47,840 a year

Questions

Why is the monthly figure not the hourly rate times four weeks?

A calendar month is longer than four weeks. Annual ÷ 12 matches a monthly salary. Hourly × weekly hours × 4 matches four weeks of pay, which is lower.

Does this deduct tax?

No. The result is the gross salary from the rate and the hours. Tax, pension, and other deductions come off after that, under the rules where the person is employed.

What if some weeks are unpaid?

Multiply by the weeks that are paid, not by 52. The calculator always uses 52. For a partial year, use the pro-rata salary calculator.
