How the formula works

Monthly salary = annual salary ÷ 12. Weekly = annual salary ÷ 52. Four-weekly = annual salary ÷ 13.

What the number means

Dividing by 12 is the monthly salary. Dividing by 52 is one week. Dividing by 13 is a four-weekly pay period, because 52 ÷ 4 is 13. Those three amounts are not interchangeable. A person paid every four weeks receives 13 payments, so each one is smaller than a calendar month.

Worked examples

£45,000 a year

45,000 ÷ 12 for the month. 45,000 ÷ 52 for the week. 45,000 ÷ 13 for four weeks.

£3,750 a month, £865.38 a week, £3,461.54 every four weeks

£60,000 a year

60,000 ÷ 12.

£5,000 a month

Questions

Why is the four-weekly amount less than the monthly amount?

There are 13 four-week periods in 52 weeks, and only 12 calendar months. The year is the same. The payment is sliced more often, so each slice is smaller.

Is this take-home pay?

No. It is the gross salary split into periods. Tax and other deductions are not calculated here.

What if pay is biweekly?

Use the pay period calculator and enter 26 periods. Biweekly is every two weeks, which is 26 payments, not 24.
