How the formula works

Gross pay per period = annual salary ÷ number of pay periods. Weekly is 52. Biweekly is 26. Semi-monthly is 24. Monthly is 12.

What the number means

Biweekly and semi-monthly are easy to mix up. Biweekly is every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semi-monthly is twice a month, 24 times a year. The biweekly amount is smaller. Two months a year, a biweekly worker receives three payments. This page shows the gross amount before tax.

Worked examples

Biweekly

£45,000 ÷ 26.

£1,730.77 gross per pay period

Semi-monthly

£45,000 ÷ 24.

£1,875 gross per pay period

Questions

Which number do I enter?

52 for weekly, 26 for every two weeks, 24 for twice a month, and 12 for monthly. If the contract names a different count, use that count.

Why did a biweekly employee get three pays in one month?

26 payments do not line up with 12 months. Two months in the year contain three biweekly paydays. The annual salary does not change.

Does this include overtime or a bonus?

No. Add those on top. This split is only the annual salary.
