How the formula works

Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier. Straight-time value = overtime hours × hourly rate, which is the same sum with the multiplier set to 1.

What the number means

The multiplier is the policy, not a law this page applies. Time and a half is 1.5. Double time is 2. A multiplier of 1 is the extra hours paid at the normal rate. The result is only the overtime, not the pay for the contracted week underneath it.

Worked examples

Six hours at time and a half

6 hours × £23 × 1.5.

£207. Straight time for those six hours would be £138.

Six hours at double time

6 × 23 × 2.

£276

Questions

Where does the hourly rate come from?

Use the rate on the contract. If you only have a salary, convert it with the salary to hourly calculator first, then come back with that rate.

Does time and a half mean the person is paid 1.5 on top of the normal hour?

No. The 1.5 replaces the normal rate for that overtime hour. It is not the normal hour plus another 1.5.

What if the overtime is taken as time off instead of pay?

Then there is no pay to calculate. Convert the hours into days with the time off in lieu calculator.
