How the formula works

Days in lieu = overtime hours ÷ hours in a working day.

What the number means

Time off in lieu stores extra hours as leave instead of paying them. 7.5 overtime hours against a 7.5-hour day is one day in lieu. A shorter day turns the same hours into more than one day. This page does not add a premium. If the policy says an hour of Sunday work is 1.5 hours of TOIL, multiply the hours by 1.5 before you enter them.

Worked examples

One full day of extra work

7.5 overtime hours. A working day is 7.5 hours. 7.5 ÷ 7.5.

1 day in lieu

A half day

3.75 ÷ 7.5.

0.5 days in lieu

Questions

What does TOIL stand for?

Time off in lieu. It is leave taken later in place of overtime pay.

Should a premium be included?

Only if the policy awards extra time, not just extra pay. Gross the hours up first. The calculator divides whatever you enter by the length of a day.

How long can TOIL be kept?

That is the policy. This page only converts hours to days. It does not expire them.
