Overtime hours calculator

How the formula works

Overtime hours = hours worked − contracted hours. If the person worked the contract or less, overtime is zero.

What the number means

This counts hours, not money. A 45-hour week against a 37.5-hour contract is 7.5 overtime hours. It does not decide whether those hours are paid, taken as time off, or both. Public holidays and premiums are a second step.

Worked examples

A long week

45 hours worked. Contract 37.5. 45 − 37.5.

7.5 overtime hours

Under the contract

36 hours worked against 37.5.

0 overtime hours

Questions

Should the contracted hours include lunch?

Use the hours the contract calls working time. If lunch is unpaid, leave it out of both numbers. Mixing a paid day with an unpaid lunch makes the overtime look larger than it is.

Can I enter a month instead of a week?

Yes, if both numbers cover the same period. A monthly total minus a monthly contract works. A monthly total minus a weekly contract does not.

How do I turn this into pay?

Take the overtime hours into the overtime pay calculator with the hourly rate and the multiplier from the policy.
