How the formula works

Whole months from the start date to the as-of date, then split into years and leftover months. If the as-of day is earlier in the month than the start day, the last month is not complete and is not counted.

What the number means

From 17 June 2019 to 1 November 2026 is 7 years and 4 months. The 1st of November is before the 17th, so November is not a completed month. Benefits that change on an anniversary often use this kind of completed service. A policy that counts the anniversary date itself as a full year may move a boundary by a few weeks. Read that policy before you change a benefit.

Questions

Does the start date count as a day of service?

The years and months are completed calendar time. The extra line shows calendar days from the start date to the as-of date, not including a second count of the start date.

What about a career break?

This page does not remove breaks. If service pauses, shorten the period to the service the policy recognises, or calculate the stretches separately.

Why do I also see calendar days?

Some rules, including notice and probation in a few contracts, use days rather than years. The day count is there so you do not have to convert.
