How the formula works

End date = the day before the start date plus the probation length in calendar months. A period that starts on 2 February for six months runs up to, and includes, 1 August.

What the number means

The result is the last day of a probation measured in calendar months. The contract sets the length and whether the end date is inclusive. Calendar months are not equal: a start date of the 31st has no matching day in a shorter month, so the anniversary uses the last day of that month and the end date is the day before it. This is not a statutory notice calculation.

Worked examples

Six months from 2 February 2026

2 February plus six calendar months is 2 August 2026. The last day of the period is the day before.

1 August 2026

One month from 31 January 2026

31 January plus one calendar month lands on 28 February 2026, because 2026 is not a leap year. The last day of the period is the day before.

27 February 2026

Questions

Why is the end date the day before the anniversary?

The start date is day one. Six months that begin on 2 February include 2 February and finish the day before 2 August.

What happens when the start date is the 31st?

The anniversary uses the last real day of the end month, then the calculator steps back one day. In 2026, 31 January plus one month ends on 27 February.

Is this the legal end of probation?

The contract sets the length, and it may say whether the period ends on the anniversary or the day before. Read that clause. This page counts calendar months only.
