How the formula works

Unused holiday pay = unused days × (annual salary ÷ working days in the year).

What the number means

Each unused day is priced at the day rate. Five days of a £45,000 salary spread over 260 working days is £865.38. The working-day count changes the price of a day. This is a planning figure for leave encashment. It is not a statutory holiday-pay calculation, and it does not decide whether the company has to pay the days out.

Worked examples

Five days left

Day rate is £45,000 ÷ 260 = £173.08. Five days × £173.08.

£865.38

No days left

0 × the day rate.

Questions

Which working days should I enter?

Use the same year basis you use for a day rate elsewhere, and write it down. 260 ignores public holidays. A lower number raises the value of each unused day.

Is this the same as holiday pay while someone is on leave?

No. Pay for a day they are away and still employed is their normal pay. This page prices days that are left over, which is the question in a leave-encashment or leaver conversation.

Do I include public holidays they did not take?

Only if those days are part of the unused balance in your policy. If public holidays are separate, leave them out of the unused-day count.
