How the formula works

Prorated bonus = full-year bonus × days in post ÷ days in the bonus year.

What the number means

Someone in post for half the days receives half the bonus, if the plan prorates by days. Plans that use whole months, or that pay nothing below a minimum service, need the rule from the plan. This page only applies the day count you enter.

Worked examples

About half a year

Full bonus £5,000. 183 days in post. 365-day year. 5,000 × 183 ÷ 365.

£2,506.85

A full year

365 days in post out of 365. The share is 100%.

£5,000

Questions

Should the day count include weekends?

Use the same kind of day in both boxes. Calendar days in post over calendar days in the year is the usual pair. Working days over working days is also fine. Mixing them is not.

What about a leaver?

Days in post are the days from the bonus-year start, or from their start date if that is later, through their last day. The plan may say they forfeit the bonus if they leave before the payment date. This page does not apply that rule.

The plan uses months, not days.

Enter months worked in the days box and 12 in the year box. Three months is then a quarter of the bonus.
