How the formula works

13th month pay = monthly basic pay × months worked ÷ 12.

What the number means

A full year pays one extra month of the basic pay you enter. Six months pays half of that month. The basic pay should be the amount the plan uses. If the plan excludes allowances, leave them out of the monthly figure. This does not calculate tax on the extra month.

Worked examples

A full year

Monthly basic £3,750. 12 months. 3,750 × 12 ÷ 12.

£3,750

Someone who joined at mid-year

£3,750 × 6 ÷ 12.

£1,875

Questions

Is the 13th month the same as a bonus?

Companies use the words differently. Here it is one month of basic pay, scaled by months worked. A bonus that is a percentage of salary belongs on the bonus calculator.

What if the plan uses days instead of months?

Enter the fraction yourself: put the full monthly basic in, then use months only when the plan is monthly. For a day-based plan, price it as unused holiday is priced, with days in post over days in the year, times one month of pay.

Does a leaver receive this?

Only if the plan says so. Enter the months they worked if it prorates. Enter zero if the plan requires them to be employed on the payment date and they will not be.
